Bodegas Riojanas

more than a century of winemaking tradition

The Artacho family had a deep wine tradition when in 1890 they founded Bodegas Riojanas together with Rafael Carreras. Signs of this tradition are the stone door built in 1799 to provide access to the family vineyards and is now preserved at the entrance to our winery, and very specially the prizes awarded to their wines before that foundation, as the golden of the Universal Exposition in Barcelona in 1888.

Throughout its 100-year history, winemaking techniques have evolved because Bodegas Riojanas combine the local winemaking tradition with the state-of-the-art winemaking techniques. Innovation goes hand in hand with respect for tradition. Therefore we have incorporated the most advanced winemaking techniques that allow for adaptation to current market trends.

Vineyards

passion for land

Bodegas Riojanas controls more than 100 hectares. From the best vineyards in Cenicero, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and nearby towns. The quintessential grape in Rioja is Tempranillo, but Bodegas Riojanas also has one of the largest areas dedicated to Mazuelo and Graciano within the denomination, varieties that provide greater personality to their wines.

The different plots of vineyards are situated on clay-limestone of Miocene origin, soils suitable for producing the highest quality.

The Harvest

rite of obtaining the products of the land

In early October, after going through the heat of summer, the harvest, which is more than simply picking grapes is done. The choice of the optimum time for harvesting, the productivity of the vines, the selection of grape batches intended to develop different types of wines of the winery... all will have influence in the final quality and characteristics of the wines obtained.

The batches of grapes from old vineyards are collected in boxes, to prevent the pressure produced by the weight breaks the grapes, assuring us that grapes arrive in optimal conditions to the winery. Once there, they undergo a meticulous manual selection bunch by bunch, obtaining wines that are the maximum exponent of Bodegas Riojanas.

THE AGING

the rest to obtain great wines

Once the grapes became wine through fermentation, it undergoes a process of aging in barrels and then bottled, all complying with the minimum requirements established by the regulations of the QDO Rioja and following the judgment of the Technique Management of the winery. The time spent in barrel and bottle determines the different categories of wine: Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva.
